- Writer's Path has started its journey.
We proudly announce that Writer's Path is online now. The Writer's Path App is also in progress and it will be available to download soon on both iOS and Android smartphones. Writer's Path is a literary map of London with the aim to remember and rekindle London's connections with literature. We add places related to literature that we encounter in research and trips to our customised Writer's Path Map and you can easily find the best literary locations of London and the routes to get between them. There are 138 locations and sixty-nine writers on our map so far, and we know that many more authors and locations will be added on this path. You can also take a part and offer literary locations to us; we will examine the locations and add them to the map. The locations with a plaque or memorial will have a greater chance of being featured. We would be more than happy to help you find the locations you are looking for; you just need to subscribe to the Writer’s Path website or download the coming Writer’s Path app to your smartphone in order to access our specialised map. - Senate House Library and George Orwell Inspiration
Senate House Library is a nineteen-storey Art Deco building designed by Charles Holden and built in the 1930s. It is one of the UK’s largest academic libraries for arts, humanities & social sciences. Notably, it was an inspiration for George Orwell when writing his dystopian novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four. The building was used as the headquarters of the Ministry of Information during the Second World War, where Orwell’s wife, Eileen Blair, worked. George Orwell himself used Senate House as the vision for the Ministry of Truth where the protagonist of Nineteen Eighty-Four, Winston, works. The Spaniards is an iconic London pub in Hampstead area dating back to the 1500s. The Spaniards Inn is an historic London pub with a strong literary connections. The pub has been mentioned in both Charles Dickens’ novel The Pickwick Papers and Bram Stoker’s Gothic horror novel Dracula. John Keats and Lord Byron were patrons of The Spaniards Inn. English author Douglas Adams was born on this day (11 March) in 1952. Douglas Noel Adams was famed for the pentalogy, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, which sold more than fifteen million copies as a novel (although it was originally broadcast as a radio show). Adams was awarded by Comic-Con International's Inkpot Awards in 1983. - Sculpture of Sir Thomas More
At this location is a sculpture of Sir Thomas More in a small garden next to Chelsea Old Church. It was made by sculptor, Leslie Cubitt Bevis. More (1478-1535) was an English lawyer, philosopher, statesman, and an author who wrote the fictional book, Utopia, which is about the social and political system of a fictional island. He argued against Henry VIII's divorce with Catherine of Aragon and his new marriage with Anne Boleyn; More was accused of treason because of refusing to take the Oath of Supremacy and executed in the Tower of London as a result of this. His last words were: "I die the King's good servant, but God's first". - Lord Byron's Birthplace
One of the greatest poets in English literature George Gordon Byron (1788-1824) – widely known as Lord Byron – was an English poet and politician. He was considered as a leading figure in Romanticism and one of the greatest poets in English literature. Some of his best-known works were Don Juan, Childe Harold's Pilgrimage, Oriental Tales, The Corsair, and She Walks in Beauty. Although there is now a John Lewis there, Lord Byron was born in a house originally on Holles Street. Westminster Abbey is a Gothic abbey church in the City of Westminster in which Poets' Corner is found; this is a treasure and inspiration for a literature lover. The first poet to be buried here was Geoffrey Chaucer, often called the father of English literature. He was the writer of The Canterbury Tales; one of the most important works of medieval literature. One of London's oldest pubs with strong literary connections. Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese is a hugely significant pub with regards to literary connections. It had many notable “regulars” including Charles Dickens, G.K. Chesterton, Mark Twain, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Alfred Tennyson, Samuel Johnson and W. B. Yeats. Voltaire even visited the Cheshire! - John Keats’ Statue
John Keats (1795-1821) was a Romantic English poet; although, he only published fifty-four poems (dying prematurely at age 25), he is one of the most well-known poets in English Literature. As well as giving up his career in medicine to become a poet, Keats was not even appreciated in his own time. Fortunately, his popularity has grown significantly since his passing. Some of his notable poems were Ode to a Nightingale, To Autumn, Ode on a Grecian Urn and On First Looking into Chapman’s Homer. This is a statue of Romantic poet, John Keats, on Guy's Hospital Campus. It is a bronze statue made by sculptor, Stuart Williamson. An outdoor sculpture of Oscar Wilde in central London. Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) was a famous Irish writer, poet and playwright best known for his contribution to the aesthetic movement in the 19th century. He only wrote one novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray, but his other notable works include The Importance of Being Earnest, Lady Windermere’s Fan, The Ballad of Reading Gaol and De Profundis. This is an outdoor memorial made by Maggi Hambling, which was dedicated to Oscar Wilde. - Highgate Cemetery
Highgate Cemetery, in North London, is a place of burial where many famous people rest; there are two sides of the cemetery, and both are worth a visit. On the East side is the tomb of the famous revolutionary, Karl Marx, the grave of the famous author, George Eliot, and the ashes of Douglas Adams, the author of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Some may find the West side more striking to visit: the Egyptian Avenue and the Circle are certainly fabulous to see. You can also visit authors such as Beryl Bainbridge, known for her psychological fiction, Stella Gibbons, the writer of Cold Comfort Farm and John Galsworthy, Nobel Prize winner in 1932, Radclyffe Hall, known for her lesbian literature, and the poet Christina Rossetti.
